UK electric vehicle sales surge as fuel prices rise

Sales of electric vehicles reached a record high in Aug’18, accounting for one in every 12 new cars purchased in the UK according to the SMMT.

The number of total vehicles registered was up 23% on the same period in 2017 with hybrid, plug-in hybrid and pure electric cars making up 8% of the overall market.

The boom in sales comes as the cost of petrol and diesel continues to increase, with pump prices having risen 8 of the last 12 months. This trend is repeated across Europe with more than a million plug-ins now on the road with Norway leading the way with 37% of sales being electric or hybrid, followed by Germany.
From a manufacturing and engineering stand-point, there is a huge wave of investment and growth here in the UK within this field of technology being led by a number of OEM’s as well as battery technology companies and associated suppliers.
